How to Charge for Brand Strategy as a Freelance Designer
Brand strategy is the highest-value thing a designer can offer. It's also the thing most designers either give away for free or avoid entirely because they're not sure how to price it.
Here's how to fix that.
Why designers undercharge for strategy
Most designers were trained to sell deliverables. A logo. A brand identity. A website. The price is tied to the output, and the output is something you can point to.
Strategy doesn't work that way. You can't hand someone a mood board of your thinking. So designers either bundle it in for free to justify their design fees, or they skip it and start designing without it.
Both approaches leave money on the table and usually lead to harder projects.
What strategy is actually worth
Brand strategy consulting from an agency typically runs $10,000 to $20,000. From a mid-level freelance strategist, you're looking at $3,000 to $8,000. The market has already decided what this work is worth. Your job is to claim a piece of it.
As a freelance designer, charging $300 to $800 for a brand strategy session is completely defensible. You're not doing a two-month engagement. You're running a focused client interview and delivering a structured document they can actually use. That's real value.
How to add it to your proposals
The simplest approach is to add a line item. Call it "Brand Strategy Session" and put it at the top of the proposal, before design work begins. Price it between $300 and $800 depending on the size of the client.
Frame it as a prerequisite, not an upsell. Something like: "Before we move into design, we run a 10-minute brand strategy session. This gives us both a clear foundation to design from and reduces revisions significantly."
Most clients say yes when it's positioned as protection for their investment.
What you deliver
A complete strategy document covering positioning, target audience, brand voice, messaging, and competitive differentiation. Not a slide deck. Not bullet points. A real document they can reference throughout the project and beyond.
When clients see what they get, $500 feels like a bargain. Most designers who start charging for strategy wonder why they waited so long.
The math
If you run five brand strategy sessions a month at $500 each, that's $2,500 in additional revenue before you design a single logo. On top of your existing project fees.
Strategy doesn't replace design work. It makes design work more valuable and easier to execute.
